Efijy, Hurricane and Coupe 60, three of Holden’s most historically significant concept cars, will take centre stage at Meguiar’s MotorEx Melbourne 2014 (July 19-20). These phenomenal machines will be showcased in special display celebrating Holden’s design excellence and rich, 66-year history in producing iconic Aussie vehicles. He’s a quick rundown on each of the star attractions.
Part race car, part road car, the Coupe 60 is all horn. When the silver two-door stunner emerged on stage through the smoke haze at the 2008 Melbourne International Motor Show, dazzled onlookers immediately started making comparisons with the Coupe Concept that debuted at the 1998 Sydney International Motor Show (the vehicle that eventually became the new Holden Monaro). Unfortunately production of the VE-based, Coupe 60 was never seriously considered, it was more about celebrating the 60th anniversary of Holden releasing the 48-215 (also known as the FX Holden). As Holden’s Design Chief, Tony Stolfo, stated at the time, “it’s a pure concept, that’s a lot of fun.”
Body mods on the brutal-looking, competition-influenced coupe are extensive; lengthened and resculptured doors, vented front guards, raked windscreen, shortened rear overhang, unique-looking LED taillights, pronounced rear diffuser, deep, front splitter, functional carbon-fibre boot spoiler and full under tray. Filling those wide, muscular guards are eye-catching, 21-inch, centre-lock wheels wrapped in ultra-fat, semi-slick track tyres. Oh, did I mention the monstrous Brembo brakes and barely muffled side exiting exhaust?
And it didn’t stop there, on the inside of the sleek, pillar-less two-door is fixed-back, carbon-fibre racing buckets, four-point harnesses all-’round, column-mounted LCD dash display and a suede-bound wheel with integrated shift lights. As for cutting edge technology, the Coupe 60’s 6.0-litre LS2 highlighted two of Holden’s soon-to-be-released technologies; E85 compatibility and Active Fuel Management (AFM) – the system which deactivates four of the V8’s eight cylinders (when appropriate) to improve fuel economy.
